Exam Questions

These are longer answer type questions - the expectation is 500 - 750 words (1 - 2 pages typed double spaced or 3 - 4 pages hand written). Organization including an introduction and conclusion are required as are paragraphs!

NOTE: You may bring one side of a page of jot notes. None may be longer than one line long. If you choose to do this you must show it to the instructor before you begin.

Answer one question from each group (10 marks each):

GROUP A

1) With reference to McLuhan, Barney, or others discuss the role/influence of technology in a democratic society and how we as educators are implicated or responsible to ensure that we are well served by our technology.

2) In your subject area give a valid classroom example of how you might use ICT to support inquiry based learning. You might want to refer to the LwICT documents for support.

3) Discuss the major roles of ICT in the classroom with regard to communication, presentation, technical instruction and student learning/assessment. What are the critical roles that ICT can play in education.

4) What would you consider to be a 'best practice' for ICT in your subject area at your level. In other words, how can technology assist learning in ways that cannot be done in the regular classroom.

5) Students are more connected and more isolated. Discuss this statement as to its relevance (bias?) and its implications for schools and classrooms.

6) All students should be issued an iPod Touch or similar device when they come to school. How would this enhance and hinder their education.

7) Choose any one of the 'big' ethical issues involving technology in the classroom and discuss how you might approach the topic with your students. Specify the target audience.

GROUP B

8) K- 4 education would be accomplished more effectively without any computing technology involved. Do you agree or not? Discuss.

9) How can technology in schools help us achieve an involved citizenship where we can encourage good discussion and political judgment (along the lines of Barney's ideas of citizenship).

10) Discuss one aspect of the bias inherent in computers and the internet as it relates to classrooms and learning.

11) In McLuhan terms discuss how the internet has enhanced our abilities, made something(s) obsolete, retrieved something old and reversed into something unintended.

13) Barney suggests that anything whose value cannot be discussed in a meaningful way has reached a point of fundamentalism. Have we reached that stage with technology in schools?

14)  Compare the prevalent electronic technologies of Marshall McLuhan’s day to the digital technologies of our Web 2.0 culture of today. Discuss how this impacts upon educators and students of today.

15) The belief that technology is merely a tool to teach with, rather than a skill set (and mindset) to be taught, has allowed a widening gap in ability among teachers. Discuss.
